How to Get Rid of a Weevil

Weevils grow inside grain and rice kernels and are often undetectable until they emerge from inside the seed. These brown to reddish insects infest grains and rice as well as garden seeds, beans, bird seed or any other kind of seed. Controlling these pests requires killing the weevils before the eggs hatch, if possible, or after. Weevils don't harm humans, pets or even objects, such as clothing or furniture, but you can avoid this nuisance if you take the right measures. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Shine a flashlight on all of your food storage and food products to find the source of the weevil infestation.

    • 2

Dispose of product infested with weevils. Wrap it in a heavy plastic bag or a sealed container, and place it in a trash can outdoors.

    • 3

Kill weevils in grains by heating or cooling the grains. Place the grain in a shallow pan in the oven, and heat the oven to 120 degrees F for one hour or to 140 degrees F for 15 minutes, or microwave the grain for five minutes. To kill the weevils by cooling, place the grain in a deep freezer at zero degrees F for three to four days.

    • 4

Vacuum out any cupboards or shelves containing the infested items. Use a vacuum attachment, and get in between cracks and corners.

    • 5

Inspect new purchases of grains and rice carefully for weevils, especially if purchasing from a grain storage facility. Treat the grain by heating or cooling it before storage to kill any eggs and prevent a weevil infestation. Keep the grain or rice clean and dry to discourage attracting weevils.
