Klutz Loom Directions for Potholders

If you have children who are interested in learning how to weave, it can be difficult to teach them properly on a full-sized weaving loom. All of the strings and levers can be confusing and frustrating to a child. One solution is to teach your child how to weave a simple potholder using a Klutz weaving loom; this project will help your child understand the basic concepts involved in weaving.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the Klutz loom on a table in front of you. There will be rows of pegs on the top, bottom, left and right sides. Each side will have 20 pegs.

    • 2

Select wool loops in the colors you would like to use in your weaving. To complete the potholder, you will need 40 loops.

    • 3

Stretch a loop across the loom, hooking it onto the top pegs on the right and left sides. Repeat this process until you have stretched and hooked loops over all of the pegs on the right and left sides.

    • 4

Weave a long weaving hook back and forth through the loops, starting at the bottom and working your way towards the top.

    • 5

Wrap the end of a loop over the hook, then pull the hook back through the weaving. The loop will be pulled through, creating one piece of weaving. Hook the ends of the loop over the top and bottom pegs on the far left and push the woven loop toward the left.

    • 6

Weave the long weaving hook back and forth through the loops again, weaving the hook opposite from the first weaving. Wrap the end of a loop and pull it through as before and hook the end over the second pegs on the top and bottom. Repeat this process, alternating the weaving, until all of the pegs have been woven.

    • 7

Unhook the loop on the uppermost right-hand peg and hook it over the peg directly below it. Lift off the loop on the second peg and pull both loops off. This is called "casting off" and it connects the loops together as you remove them from the pegs to create a clean, finished edge around the potholder. Repeat this process around the entire outside edge. When you reach the last loop, tie it into a tight knot to complete the potholder.
