Do I Install a Bathtub on a Subfloor?
Installing a bathtub is not a job to be taken lightly. There are a few steps that should be taken before installing a bathtub on a subfloor. If you have removed your old bathtub or are going to put the bathtub into new construction, the job will become much more manageable. Even so, the installation of a bathtub always requires the newest advanced plumbing and construction skills, and will require some heavy lifting.

Frame all walls around the tub to fit into the alcove, leaving 1/4 inch around all sides. Install all the plumbing supply lines for both the shower head and faucet.

Set the tub in place; using the level make sure the bottom of the tub is perfectly level. If it is not leveled properly, use a plastic shim to level the tub.

Determine the measurement and positioning of the ledger board. This board will attach to the wall stud underneath the tub for support

Install the drain pipe so that the top is level with the floor and will be center under the drain pipe from the tub.
Install the ledger board where previously determined. Use galvanized screws to prevent rusting.

Put the tub in place and set it directly on the ledgers. The drain pipe from the tub should slide directly down into the tub. Fasten the tub in position by nailing through the flanges.

Put the drain plug assembly directly through the overflow opening and attach the cover-plate for the overflow. Turn on the water to test the plumbing and drainage system for any issues.

Always use caution when trying to remove, or replace a tub due to the excessive weight.
