How to Open a PDF in Safari Without Using the Acrobat Plugin

The latest versions of the Safari browser has built-in PDF support. This means Safari does not need a third-party plugin, such as the Adobe Acrobat plug-in to open a PDF in a browser window. However, if the plugin is already installed, it will block Safari's native PDF engine from opening PDFs. To have Safari resume opening PDFs, you will need to delete the Acrobat plugin from the Internet Plugins folder.

Instructions

  1. Remove the Adobe PDF Plugin

    • 1

Click the "Finder" icon in the Dock on the desktop. A new Finder window will open.

    • 2

Click "Macintosh HD" under "Devices" in the left pane of the window, then click the "Library" folder.

    • 3

Click "Internet Plugins," then select the Adobe Acrobat plugin file and drag it into the Trash. Press and hold the "Control" key while simultaneously clicking on the "Trash" icon. Select "Empty Trash" from the pop-up menu to completely remove the plugin.
