How to Pray Over Anointing Oil

How to Pray Over Anointing Oil thumbnail
Any kind of oil can used for anointing, but olive oil is traditionally recommended.

Since Biblical times, Christians have anointed people with oil for various reasons. Oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit and is applied to believers when they are ill or in need of prayer. The feeling of oil on the skin is meant to remind believers of the constant presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Pour the oil into a small dish and bring it into the presence of the indisposed person. You don't need a lot of oil, just enough to put a small amount on the person's head.

    • 2

Explain the significance of the oil. Tell the person that the oil represents the Holy Spirit in his life. Make sure that you inform the person that the oil will not, in itself, make him better. Remind him that only God can heal, and that the oil simply serves to remind him of God.

    • 3

Put your finger in the dish of oil and apply it to the person's head. Either draw a cross with the oil or just put a few drops on the person's forehead. You don't need to use a lot of oil unless the indisposed person desires it because of his personal beliefs.

    • 4

Pray over the person. Announce that you anoint him in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Pray for healing, both physically and spiritually. Pray out loud and ask God to grant the person His presence. Pray for as long as you see fit, or as long as the recipient desires.

    • 5

Comfort the recipient of the oil. Answer any questions he has and direct him to further resources. If the sickness or problem persists, ask him if he wants you to come back to anoint him again at a later date. Let the person know that you will continue to pray for him and help him with any current needs that he may have.
