How Do I Get to the Pump in My Whirlpool Dishwasher?

To vacate the water from the dishwasher cavity, Whirlpool dishwashers rely on a pump to pump the water out of the tub, down the drain hose and into the drain. If the pump breaks, the dishwasher will not properly drain until the pump is replaced. The pump is located below the dishwasher, and the dishwasher must be pulled out from under the cabinet and turned on its back to access, which requires a removal of the dishwasher. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the dishwasher breaker in your service panel. Turn off the water supply valve that supplies water to the dishwasher, probably located below your kitchen sink.

    • 2

Remove the bottom kick-plate from the dishwasher. Unscrew the screws on the sides of the plate and pull the plate off.

    • 3

Remove the water supply line from the water inlet valve on the left-hand side of the underside of the dishwasher. To remove, loosen the nut with an adjustable wrench.

    • 4

Remove the junction box cover screw, located on the right-hand side of the junction box cover. The junction box is located on the right side of the underside of the dishwasher.

    • 5

Remove the wire nuts from the wires inside of the junction box. Loosen the grounding screw and pull the bare copper wire off of the screw post.

    • 6

Loosen and remove the strain relief nut securing the conduit cable to the inside of the junction box. Pull the conduit cable out of the junction box from the rear.

    • 7

Remove the dishwasher drain hose from your garbage disposal or under-sink plumbing. To remove, loosen the screw on the clamp and then pull the hose off of the inlet. Feed the hose through the cabinet into the dishwasher compartment.

    • 8

Remove the mounting screws from the top of the front of the dishwasher, securing the dishwasher to the underside of the cabinet or countertop.

    • 9

Turn the dishwasher legs counter-clockwise to raise the dishwasher.

    • 10

Pull the dishwasher straight out of the cabinet.

    • 11

Flip the dishwasher onto its back, with the help of a partner. Ensure that the dishwasher is resting on a soft surface, such as a towel or carpet. The drain pump is now accessible through the underside of the dishwasher.
