How to Read a Cleared Internet History

Internet browsers often keep a history and cache of previously visited websites to allow the pages to load quicker when they are revisited. Some users may wish to keep the sites they visit private and therefore delete them from the Internet history of the browser. Once the history is cleared, the website no longer appears in the history window. Windows-based computers feature a tool called System Restore that allows users to restore their system to a previous point. This reveals the settings of the system at that given day and includes the Internet History.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Start" menu in the taskbar.

    • 2

Type "System Restore" in the Search box.

    • 3

Double-click System Restore from the list of results. The System Restore window will launch.

    • 4

Double-click a restore point from the calendar. The restore point date should correspond to the date from which you wish to read the Internet history.

    • 5

Follow the on-screen prompts to restore your computer. Your computer will automatically restart once the restore has been successfully completed.

    • 6

Launch the Internet browser once your computer boots up.

    • 7

In Internet Explorer, select "View" from the drop-down menu, choose "Explorer Bars" and select "History." In Firefox, choose "History" and select "Show All History."

Tips & Warnings

  • If you run Disk Cleanup and delete shadow copies of your system restore points, it will erase the Internet history associated with the dates of the shadow copies.
