How to Engrave on Metal Using Acid

Metal engraving with acid is a technique that offers the craftsman a lot more design freedom than more traditional techniques. Whereas engraving with a tool removes metal to create patterns, acid erodes the surface, revealing the lower layers. Acid enables the engraver to create free form patterns which incorporate unique artistic styles. Acid engraving is a common way to create personalized gifts and individuals with very little or no prior experience can do it.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the sheet of metal with a dry cloth to remove any dirt or dust.

    • 2

Heat the wax in a microwave until it melts.

    • 3

Spread the wax thinly on the surface of the metal. Allow the wax to dry. This could take up to three hours, depending on the type used.

    • 4

Draw the desired pattern or lettering onto the metal sheet with an etcher's needle. The metal sheet should be showing where you require the etching to take place. Wax should remain where you require no etching to occur.

    • 5

Pour the acid over the metal sheet with wax on it. Ensure the sheet is flat to enable the acid to sit on the surface and leave for 15 minutes. Wear safety goggles and gloves to protect your eyes and hands.

    • 6

Remove the wax with a wooden craft stick to reveal the etched metal.
