How to Make a Ladybug Flannel Board Piece
Flannel boards are useful educational tools that teachers or parents can use to engage children in interactive lessons. These boards are backed with flannel or felt and can be plain or feature a scene. The purpose of a flannel board is to bring a story or concept to life, sparking children's interest and making the story or concept easier for children to relate to. If you plan on using a flannel board to teach about ladybugs or to tell the popular children's story "The Grouchy Ladybug" by Eric Carle, you can easily make your own ladybug pieces using felt, scissors and glue.

1
Lay a piece of red felt out on a flat surface. Select a circular item to use as a stencil to create circles for the ladybugs' bodies on the felt -- the bottom of a glass or the base of a tin can works well. Place the circular stencil on the red felt and trace around it with a marker.

2
Lay a piece of black felt on a flat surface. Select a small circular item to serve as a stencil for making the spots on the ladybugs -- the cap of a marker or the base of a lipstick tube is a good choice. Place the selected item on top of the black felt and trace around it with a piece of chalk. Make four or five circles for each ladybug you intend on making.

Cut out the red and black felt circles. Assemble the ladybugs by using craft glue to attach the four or five black circles to the back of the red circles.

4
Make a head for the felt ladybug pieces. Use the black marker to draw a semicircle near the edge of the red felt circles.

Tips & Warnings
If you'd like to make your ladybugs look as if they have wings, use the black marker to draw a line that extends down the center of the ladybug from the head to the end of the shape.
