How to Write a File to a CD

Storing a file on a CD is a method you can use to transport files from one location to another. Using rewritable CDs, or CD-RW, it is possible to take a file home, work on it using your home computer, save any revisions and return to work with the file the next day. However, if you use a writable CD, or CD-R, you can only add files to it once.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert your CD-R or CD-RW into the computer's CD/DVD burn drive. This action triggers the "AutoPlay" dialog box to open automatically.

    • 2

Select "Burn Files to Disc" in the "AutoPlay" dialog box to open the "Burn a Disc" dialog box.

    • 3

Enter a disc name in the "Disc Title:" text box in the "Burn a Disc" dialog box. Click the "With a CD/DVD Player" radio button, and then click the "Next" button to close the "Burn a Disc" dialog box and open the "Burn CD" folder.

    • 4

Open the folder containing the files you want to write to the CD, and drag the files from their folder to the Burn CD folder.

    • 5

Click the "Burn to Disc" link in the upper right corner of the Burn CD folder. Eject the CD after you complete burning the files to the CD, and label the CD so you can identify it.
