How to Photograph a Nightclub
Photographers are often confronted with challenging lighting conditions. But a photographer must be able to provide quality images to his client once the job is booked. Photographing a nightclub is one such assignment that can present a number of different challenges. Nightclubs are generally darker, and they can be large in size, presenting a challenge in lighting the space correctly. Nightclubs are also busy places with dancing people and working employees, which can make it difficult to use a tripod.

Arrange for viewing of the nightclub when it is not open. Ask the owner if he can turn on the lights that are in normal use when the club is open. Observe how the lights in the club illuminate the room, and pick three to five scenes or areas in the club you want to photograph.

Use the fastest lens you have. Fast lenses have very large apertures that let a lot of light in. They are called fast lenses because the more light they let in, the faster shutter speed you can use. These lenses are also ideal for low-light photography. Fast lenses have minimum apertures of f/2.0 or lower.

Set your camera to "Manual" exposure mode. Set the camera's ISO to a higher level. Set your shutter speed to 1/60, and set the lens aperture to its widest setting -- or the smallest number. Begin taking pictures and adjust the exposure until you achieve a picture that captures the mood of the club.

Look for interesting angles and areas where the club's light illuminates certain areas. If you use a flash, turn the flash power down so it only adds a little light to the people directly in front you. Balance the club's light with light from the flash.
