Morning sickness, backaches, clothes that don't fit.... It can be hard to feel intimate or even think about expressing intimacy during pregnancy. Here are some ways to stay intimate during a pregnancy.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Plan a day or evening when you and your partner can sit and discuss your feelings. If you feel your relationship is in a rut because of your pregnancy, be honest and specific with each other about how it is making you feel.

  2. Step 2

Make a list of things that the other can do to make you feel special, wanted or even sexy. Include things like chores you can do for each other, compliments you can make, meals you can prepare or outfits you can wear. Be creative and have fun.

  3. Step 3

Exchange lists and read them to each other. Make sure you understand the items your partner has written. If something is unclear, be specific in explaining what you want your partner to do. Instead of saying, "Be more supportive," try, "Ask me every day how I feel and if you can do anything for me." Choose an item from the list to do every day.

  4. Step 4

Purchase something that will make you feel sexy. Women might buy a silky piece of lingerie; men might buy some silky boxers. Buy matching silky robes or a new pair of bed sheets.

  5. Step 5

Buy a book on pregnancy and intimacy. Set up a schedule to sit and read from it together. Try the suggestions offered in the book and use the ideas you are comfortable with.

  6. Step 6

Massage each other. Women will find this especially comforting because of the many aches pregnancy can cause. Massage can also create an intimate atmosphere, even if it doesn't lead to intercourse.

Tips & Warnings
  • Couples can remain intimate up to the end of the pregnancy. In some cases, intercourse will help a full-term mother go into labor.
  • If you begin to lose your temper while discussing your feelings, ask your partner to finish the discussion at another time or try writing letters to each other.
  • Consult your obstetrician if you experience extreme discomfort or bleeding during intercourse.
  • Avoid massaging ankles, as this can cause spontaneous contractions of the uterus during pregnancy.
  • Seek professional advice if you feel your relationship is in danger.
