How to Treat the Yard for Chiggers
Chiggers are small, red insects that live in brush and attack humans, causing red, itchy bites. Chiggers tend to swarm any new object that enters their environment, so you will rarely have only one bite. If you have a chigger infestation in your yard, you should take immediate action to remove them to prevent bites on yourself and your pets. Chiggers prefer high grass and weedy areas. Remove any water-filled receptacles in your yard, including kiddie pools or bird baths. Chiggers tend to congregate around wet environments.

Mow your grass as short as is appropriate for your variety of lawn. Remove the cut grass and dispose of it in garbage bags. Remove any accumulated brush or wood piles. Mow any overgrown ditches or garden areas.

Spray the yard with a diazinon or chlorpyrifos insecticide, according to the package directions. Do not allow children or pets in the yard for the time instructed on the package. Apply the insecticide on a calm, still day to prevent runoff from rains or transference of the chemicals because of high winds.

Reapply the insecticide as needed.
