How do I Install a Power Supply on an eMachines Computer?
Old power supplies for eMachines do not last forever and need to be replaced when they stop functioning. This is apparent when the power button is pressed and the computer does not turn on. Bad power supplies cause a functioning computer to randomly shut off. Sometimes, power supplies are changed to a more powerful unit to increase the wattage available to software programs like resource-intensive games. When removing the old power supply, do not loose any screws and make sure to label the wires on the old power supply.

Compare the new power supply to the old one. The size of the power supplies should be the same. Remove the wire labels from the old power supply and place them on the matching wires of the new power supply. Do not worry if there are extra wires, since they are there to plug in any new hardware that maybe added later.

2
Slide the replacement power supply unit into the computer case and match the screw holes on the case with the holes on the power supply. Screw the three case screws into the power supply with a screwdriver. Tighten the screws, so the power supply is securely in place and does not wiggle.

Hook the wires from the power supply to the hardware components inside the computer. Use the labels on the wires as reference to attach power wires to the CD-ROM, DVD, hard drive and motherboard. The connectors only fit one way, so if they do not snap into place, turn the connector over and try again. Do not force the connectors into place, since this will break the plastic pieces.

Attach the 20-pin connector from the power supply unit to the motherboard. Tuck the wires into the case, so none of the wires will be pinched when the case cover is replaced. Slide the cover pieces back onto the frame and screw in the cover screws. Replace the front faceplate.

Reconnect the keyboard, mouse and monitor to the computer tower. Hook the power cord up to the power supply unit and check the power setting on the back of the power supply. It should read 115V, which is the proper setting for North American power supplies. Plug the computer into the wall socket and boot up the eMachine to make sure that it is functioning properly. The computer should start right up.

Tips & Warnings
Spray the carpet in the work area with a 50-percent dilution of fabric softener before beginning any computer work. This reduces static electricity generated by the fibers in the carpet. Always touch the metal frame of the eMachine before touching anything inside to discharge excess static electricity, which can short out computer components.
Disconnect the power from the computer before starting work on the power supply. This is to prevent electrocution. Remove all hand jewelry and any loose clothing that can catch on sharp edges inside the case.
