How to Retrieve Erased MSN Emails

How to Retrieve Erased MSN Emails thumbnail
MSN Hotmail, now Windows Live Hotmail, is an online email client.

Windows Live Hotmail, formerly MSN Hotmail, is a Web-based email client similar to Yahoo! Mail and Google Gmail. Founded in 1996, Hotmail was purchased by Microsoft in 1997 and became MSN Hotmail in 1998. As the program underwent numerous changes, it eventually became Windows Live Hotmail, though the service is still accessible through the MSN.com website. Although deleted messages are saved in your "Trash Can" folder for a brief period of time, once you empty the trash or exceed your Hotmail storage limit, you'll be unable to recover the messages.

Instructions

  1. Recovering a Deleted Message

    • 1

Open your Internet browser, type "Hotmail.com" into the browser's address bar and press "Enter."

    • 2

Under "Windows Live ID," type your full email address. For example, type "myemailaddress@hotmail.com" instead of simply "myemailaddress." Enter your password in the text box labeled "Password." Click the "Sign In" button under the "Password" field.

    • 3

Open the tab labeled "Mail" from Hotmail's main screen. Click the "Trash Can" folder to pull up your deleted messages still available for recovery.

    • 4

Locate the message you'd like to recover, and tick the check box next to it. Do the same thing for any additional messages you'd like to recover.

    • 5

Click the "Put in Folder" button, and select the folder to which you'd like to send the deleted messages. For example, selecting "Inbox" sends the deleted messages back to your Hotmail inbox.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you make it to Step 3 but can't find the "Trash Can" folder, your folders are likely hidden. Click "Show Folders" in the upper left corner to make the "Trash Can" folder visible.

  • After retrieving the erased email, consider saving it to your computer and deleting it within Hotmail again. This helps keep your Hotmail storage space free and ensures you have the message saved offline if it's important. Click "File" and "Save As" from within the open email, and save the email to your desired location.
