How to Check VINs on ATVs
Just like automobiles or motorcycles, ATVs come equipped with VIN numbers. The Vehicle Identification Number indicates manufacturing location, part and component information and several other pieces of data. Consumers need this information to register the ATV or to repair it with the appropriate parts. Any vehicle without a VIN is most likely stolen or has been altered. While most owners may know the VIN itself, they probably don't have any idea what the individual numbers and letters stand for.

1
Find the VIN on the vehicle. In most models it is located on the frame of the ATV near the front two wheel wells of the carriage. Otherwise, you can find the number in the ownership paperwork or registration material.
-
2
Contact the dealer, manufacturer or the individual seller (in private sales) for help with a missing VIN. It is possible in some cases that the VIN was worn off the vehicle or the paperwork was lost.

Learn what the individual numbers represent. ATV VINs are typically 17 to 20 digits. The first three numbers or letters represent the manufacturer; the next five identify the vehicle, engine, brakes and other components. The third section is called a check digit; the fourth section is a two-digit model year; the fifth section represents the locale of the plant that created the VIN; and the final section (of up to six digits) is the production number created by the manufacturer.
