How to Downgrade Internet Explorer 8 to 7 on Vista

Internet Explorer 7 is the default Web browser shipped with the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. Internet Explorer 8 can be downloaded and installed manually or can be installed through the Windows Update feature. Occasionally, the newer version is incompatible with software or some Internet-based applications, or does not meet expectations. In this case, you can downgrade to Internet Explorer 7.

Instructions

    • 1

Close Internet Explorer. Click the "Start" button or press the "Windows" key to bring up the Windows Start menu.

    • 2

Type "Appwiz.cpl" in the Search box at the bottom of the Start menu and press "Enter." The Programs and Features program window appears.

    • 3

Click "View installed Updates" beneath "Tasks" in the upper-left side of the program window. A list of installed updates will appear on the right side of the program window.

    • 4

Right-click "Windows Internet Explorer 8" and click "Uninstall." Click "Yes" when a dialog box appears asking if you want to proceed with removing the program.

    • 5

Restart the computer once Windows has notified you Internet Explorer 8 has been successfully removed.

    • 6

Launch Internet Explorer 7 by double-clicking the "Internet Explorer" icon on your desktop.

Tips & Warnings

  • While downgrading Internet Explorer will reset all browser-related configuration settings, your favorites list will remain intact.
