Method for Prorating Rents

If you are moving into an apartment in the middle of the month, you should be paying pro-rated rent, or rent proportionate to the fraction of the month that you will be living in the apartment. You can use a formula to determine how much pro-rated rent you should be paying, independently of your reasons for moving in mid-month or the total amount of the rent.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine how many days there are in the first month that you will be residing in the apartment.

    • 2

Divide the total amount of rent by the number of days in your first month, to determine the total rent per day.

    • 3

Determine how many days, in your first month, you will be living in the apartment. For instance, if you move in on Nov. 20 and November has 31 days, you will be in your apartment for 12 days.

    • 4

Multiply the total rent per day by the total number of days that you will be in the apartment in your first month. This rent is equal to the pro-rated rent that you should pay.
