How to Make a Girl Tomboy a Friend

Never boss a tomboy around.

A "tomboy" is a girl who enjoys traditionally masculine activities. She may like playing sports, climbing trees or just generally getting dirty. She likely wears practical clothing, such as jeans and T-shirts; frilly dresses aren't her style. Tomboys can be lots of fun if you like spending time with girls but doing things usually associated with boys. Keep in mind though, that tomboys aren't pushovers: if one doesn't want to be your friend, you probably won't convince her otherwise.

Instructions

    • 1

Do activities she enjoys. Tomboys often enjoy doing physical activities, like rough and tumble games or competitive pastimes. Ask your tomboy what she would like to do on a weekend or after school. Even if they're not things you usually do, give them a try anyway.

    • 2

Get outdoors. Perform activities that take place outside the house---tomboys are not ones for staying inside and playing with dolls. Even if it's just a walk around the block, getting outside shows your tomboy that you have a sense of adventure, no matter how small.

    • 3

Introduce her to your guy friends or other friends who are also tomboys. These girls often like to be around individuals who share their style of fun. Consider making a small sports team that includes your tomboy and gather to play games on a regular basis.

    • 4

Let her take charge. Tomboys like to be in control, and aren't meek and mild the way some girls are. Let her boss you around every once in a while, and give her the feeling of control and power girls don't often get to enjoy.

    • 5

Discuss actions, not feelings. Like regular guys, tomboys don't often like to talk about feelings---it makes them feel vulnerable. Cheer her up if she's feeling sad by doing something active, not talking about it. Discuss feelings only if she brings them up, but be quick and to the point. Don't dwell on them, or you risk making your tomboy uncomfortable. Offer practical solutions to problems whenever possible.

    • 6

Accept her for who she is. Let her wear the clothing of her choice without comment---if that means oversized shirts and shorts, then so be it. Don't pressure her to wear makeup, jewelry or form-fitting clothing---nothing will make her reject you faster.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't be surprised if your tomboy only calls you when she wants to do something and not just to chat. Tomboys often see idle chit-chat as too girly.
