Installation Instructions for an A&E Slide Out Awning

A camper slide out allows you to have more room in your camper. While the slide out is in the extended position, dirt and debris may settle on its roof. An A&E slide out awning protects the top of the slide out and helps prevent debris from coming into the camper when you retract the slide out. Installation is a simple process that you should be able to finish in a short time with the help of an assistant. Does this Spark an idea?

Determine where you plan to place the awning rail above the slide out. The distance above the slide out depends on your camper as well as the type of siding on it. Measure the mounting distance from the bottom of the awning rail to the inside edge of the slide out room frame. Follow the recommendations for your particular A&E slide out awning. Mark the location of the rail. Use a level to ensure the marks are level.

Insert a tube of silicone caulk into a caulk gun. Cut off the tip. Run a bead of caulking along the back of the awning rail. Have your assistant hold the awning rail in position as you attach it to the camper using #6 by 1/2-inch screws from the assembly kit. Depending on your model of awning, you might need to install spacers between the awning rail and the exterior wall of the camper.

Install the brackets near the upper right corner of the slide out. Use the #10 by 1-inch screws from the assembly package.

    • 4

Unwrap about 6 inches of the awning. Slide the awning onto the awning rail from right to left. As the bracket arm from the awning passes the awning bracket, slide the arm into the bracket. Seat the awning fully into the awning rail. Slide the awning's bracket arm into the left front bracket. Attach the left front bracket to the slide out using #10-by-1-inch screws. Use two #10-by 3/4-inch self-drilling screws from the assembly package to attach the bracket arms to each of the front brackets. Permanently attach the bracket arms to the awning rail with rivets from the assembly package.

Remove the cotter pins from each end of the awning by straightening the pins. Unwrap the awning as you open the slide out. Open and close the awning and slide out a couple times to center the awning fabric. Use a #7 by 0.63-inch screw through the outer edge of the awning and into the rail to hold the awning in place.

Put the locking mechanism on the end of the awning closest to the front of the camper. Align it so the bumper is pointing straight up. Fasten the locking mechanism in place with #10 self-drilling screws from the installation kit. Attach the spacer on the wall of the camper so that the bumper rests against it if it goes off the vertical position and comes toward the camper, using #10-by-3/4-inch screws from the assembly package.

Install edge protectors to the top corners of the slide out where the A&E awning comes in contact with it. Use the screws that come with the edge protectors.
