How to Boost the Download Speed of a File for Windows XP

Download accelerators can make file transfer faster.

One method to boost the download speed for a file in Microsoft Windows is to use one of the many free download manager or download accelerator programs. These tools open multiple connections to the same or mirror download sites and download sections of a file simultaneously to increase download speed. Tests of download accelerators and download managers by CNET.com showed anywhere from a 200-percent to a 400-percent increase in file download speeds.

Instructions

1. Locate a free download manager or download accelerator program by comparing features to your needs and reading online reviews (see Resources).

2. Click the "Download" or similar link to download the program you selected to your computer. Choose "Save File" when prompted. Choose "Run" when the download has completed.

3. Follow the installation prompts to install the tool. Close all browsers after installation and restart them in order to use the download manager or accelerator tool immediately. Some programs may require you to reboot your PC after installation.

4. Click "OK" or a similar prompt when downloading files to allow the download manager or accelerator to control the download and provide increased downloading speed.
