How to Assemble a 38 Special Iron on Tattoo Machines

How to Assemble a 38 Special Iron on Tattoo Machines thumbnail
The .38 Special is a coil-style tattoo machine.

Most .38 Specials are five shot revolvers but the ".38 Special Revolver Iron Tattoo Machine" has a cylinder embedded in the frame with six replica bullets. This machine is widely available, comparatively inexpensive and usually used with a shading needle. It is a coil tattoo gun, which is the more modern of two kinds of tattoo machines. The earlier style, the rotary tattoo gun, is based on Thomas Edison's electric pencil and rotary guns are still available. It should take less than 5 minutes to assemble your .38 Special Tattoo machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Push the needle bar assembly through the tube taking care not to damage the needle.

    • 2

Insert the tube and needle bar assembly into the tube clamp on the body of the tattoo gun.

    • 3

Insert a "top hat grommet" into the eye loop on the end of the needle bar assembly opposite the needle.

    • 4

Slip the eye loop onto the "top hat" stud on the end of the armature. The armature is on the top of the gun over the coils.

    • 5

Adjust the tube over the needle bar assembly until you can just see the end of the needle.

    • 6

Tighten the thumbscrew on the side of the tube clamp.

    • 7

Secure the needle in the tube by looping 2 rubber bands over the top of the gun so that the bands stretch from the needle bar assembly to the back of the .38 Special Tattoo machine frame.
