You can lift fingerprints for entertainment or education purposes.

It is possible to learn how to lift latent fingerprints from most surfaces. It is, however, easier to first start using a smooth and flat surface, such as a glass table. You can find fingerprinting kits which include all the material you need for this activity at toy stores or at various online shops.

Things You'll Need

  • Fingerprint brush
  • Black fingerprint powder
  • Lifting tape
  • Small, white paper card

Instructions

    • 1

Take the brush and put a little bit of black fingerprint powder on it. Be careful not to put too much powder on it, as it could make the rest of the process more difficult.

    • 2

Brush the surface which contains the fingerprint you want to process. Do it gently, applying light pressure. Continue to brush until the fingerprint appears.

    • 3

Place the fingerprinting tape over the fingerprint. Apply the tape in a smooth, regular motion, with complete adhesion between the tape and the fingerprint.

    • 4

Remove the tape, and place it on a small paper card. You can use the back of a non-glossy, white business card.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you need to lift fingerprints for legal reasons, contact a professional. Lifting a fingerprint yourself could damage it, and you may not be able to use it in court.
