How to Install an Exhaust Manifold on an S10

by Russell Wood

The exhaust manifold on a Chevrolet S-10 directs the gasses created by the engine out to the exhaust system, where it exits the truck through the tailpipe. The manifold is cast iron and is designed to do the job, but not designed to increase horsepower. Installing a new exhaust manifold on your S-10 can increase the horsepower. This should take about an hour to do properly.

Step 1

Lift the front of the truck using the jack and put jack stands underneath the S-10's frame. Crawl underneath the truck and locate the connection between the exhaust and the exhaust manifold. Remove the bolts securing the two with the ratchet and socket.

Step 2

Open the hood. Remove bolts holding the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head using the ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench. Pull the manifold off the engine block.

Step 3

Set the replacement exhaust manifold onto the cylinder head, loosely bolting it in place with the stock bolts, making sure that the factory gasket is between the manifold and the head.

Step 4

Tighten the exhaust manifold bolts starting with the center of the exhaust manifold and working your way out using a combination of the wrench and ratchet.

Step 5

Reinstall the bolts holding the exhaust tubing to the exhaust manifold using the ratchet. Lower the S-10 off the stands using the jack.
