How to Assume a Cat Stance in Wushu

The cat stance (ding bo) allows for quick blocking and attacking, and for leaping out of the way of an attack. It is characterized by the narrow distance between the front and rear legs.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Put your front toe about 12 inches in front of your back foot.

  2. Step 2

    Point both feet forward, with nearly all weight on the back leg.

  3. Step 3

    Bend your back leg as much as possible without leaning forward.

  4. Step 4

    Bend your front leg and rest it lightly on the ball of the foot.

  5. Step 5

    Center your head and shoulders directly over your hips.

  6. Step 6

    Shift your hips backward, as if you were sitting on the edge of a chair, ready to spring forward.

Tips & Warnings
  • If positioned correctly, you'll be able to lift your front leg off the ground without losing your balance or shifting weight to the back leg.
  • In Hui bo - a modification of ding bo - toes are parallel and face inward instead of to the front. The body's weight and balance are centered over the back leg.
  • Martial arts is a physically demanding activity. Warm up with stretching before attempting any martial arts technique.
