How to Assume a T-Stance in Tae Kwon Do

The T-stance is a variation of the back stance. In sparring, sliding into a T-stance helps you transition into a different position or range more easily.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Martial Arts Supplies
  • Martial Arts Uniforms
  • Martial Arts Videos
  1. Step 1

    Look forward, but turn your chest and hips to the side.

  2. Step 2

    Maintain a straight posture.

  3. Step 3

    Slide your front foot forward, with your knee bent 90 degrees.

  4. Step 4

    Place your back foot perpendicular to the front foot.

  5. Step 5

    Bend your back leg close to a 90-degree angle.

  6. Step 6

    Allocate your weight evenly on your legs.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your T-stance should resemble a horse stance, only with one foot perpendicular to the other.
  • In judo, the T-stance is used to prevent being thrown.
  • Practice your stance in front of a wall mirror. Seek to lower your stance to increase stability and strengthen leg muscles.
  • The martial arts are physically demanding. Warm up with stretches before attempting any martial arts technique.
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity.
