How to Shelve With Wood
If you are moving into a new house or apartment, it may seem as though the walls are plain and blank. One way to make the walls more decorative and homey is to put up wall shelving. You can place special items or artistic pieces onto the shelves to add to the room's decor. Instead of spending a lot of money on wall shelves, you can make them yourself using basic building materials.

1
Place a wooden board onto a flat surface, then rub a piece of medium-grain sandpaper over the entire surface using small, circular motions. This will wear away roughness and splintering on the wood.
-
2
Rub a piece of fine-grain sandpaper over the entire surface of the wood using the same small circular motions. This will allow the wood to be smooth and sleek.
-
3
Wipe off the wood board using a damp towel, then vacuum up any remaining sawdust using a shop vacuum.
-
4
Paint the entire surface of the wood board using a clear latex paint. Allow the paint to dry for at least four hours.
-
5
Run a stud finder along the wall you want to hang a shelf onto, and mark two studs close together using a pencil.
-
6
Place a level against the wall by the marks, and create new marks along the studs where the level is even.
-
7
Place two shelving brackets against the marks, and drill them into the wall using a drill and 2-inch screws. The screws should enter the studs of the wall securely.
-
8
Place the wood shelf on top of the brackets, and drill screws into the brackets using 1-inch screws to secure the shelf onto the brackets. Repeat the entire process to hang up as many shelves as you require.
