How to Tie Two Electrical Cords

How to Tie Two Electrical Cords thumbnail
Extension cords often come in handy.

Most experts suggest avoiding the use of electrical extension cords whenever possible, especially multiple electrical cords linked together, as this can lead to "line loss" and local overheating as well as a reduction on power received by the device at the end of the extension cords, which can result in damage to motor windings. That said, there are times when you really need to use two or more extension cords connected together and there are a couple of safety precautions you can take to minimize hazards. First, run the cords along out of the way routes -- like along walls or under carpets or furniture -- to prevent tripping accidents, and also tie a knot with one cord at each plug to provide strain relief and prevent accidental unplugging. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Take the male plug from one extension cord and the female plug from another extension cord and overlap the ends of the cords by 12 to 18 inches. Tie a loose square knot using the two cord ends and tighten it about three-quarters, leaving the male and female plug ends adjacent.

    • 2

Plug the male plug tightly into the female plug and tighten the square knot a little, but leave the knot relatively loose. Now the plugs cannot be pulled apart even if somebody trips over the cord, and there is no strain on either the male or female plug.

    • 3

Repeat the square-knot-tying process described above for each pair of extension cords you are connecting.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use a granny knot or any other kind of overhand knot as well as a square knot. The key is that the knot will offer resistance to pulling force from either direction.

  • Do not tie the knot too tight as this can over-bend and damage the extension cords. A semi-tightened knot is fine to accomplish the safety goal.
