How to Use a Pocket Hole Machine

How to Use a Pocket Hole Machine thumbnail
Most cabinet shops use pocket hole machines.

A pocket hole machine is used to bore holes at an angle through wood. The drill bit is followed by a countersink bit that bores a pocket into the wood for the head of the screw to sink into. Pocket hole machines have a foot-operated hydraulic plunger that holds the wood in place as the bit emerges from the machine to drill the hole and cut the pocket.

Instructions

Lay the board face up on top of the pocket hole machine. On one side of the machine, you will see a hole where the bit emerges at an angle. Slide the board over against the fence of the machine, on top the hole, lining up the hole in the bottom with the location where you want your hole drilled.

Turn on the machine. On one side of the machine, you will see a place where you stick your foot inside a small box. Inside the box there is a round lever. Place your foot inside the box and push down on the lever.

Hold the board on both ends and push it against the fence as the hydraulic plunger comes down on top of the wood. You will hear the drill bit, followed by the countersink cutting into the board and then backing out again. When the cutting noise stops, release the button with your foot.

Pull the board out of the machine. Turn off the machine or drill more holes the same way.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most pocket hole machines are set to drill ¾-inch stock, but you can set them to drill almost any width of board.

  • Always keep your fingers away from the hydraulic plunger. Never put your foot in the box until you are ready to cut the pocket hole.
