How to Flush the Gas Tank in a Tractor

How to Flush the Gas Tank in a Tractor thumbnail
A dirty tractor gas tank will cause problems.

The gas tank is often overlooked during tractor maintenance. If the tank is not flushed, it is futile to clean the fuel filter and carburetor, or to replace the fuel lines. If the tractor is not used on a regular basis, or if it's stored for the winter, the gas tank can accumulate condensation and grime. Condensation in older gas tanks can result in rust, causing damage to the carburetor. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the fuel hose at the gas tank. Drain the gas tank into a bucket. Remove the fuel gauge wire from the tank.

    • 2

Remove the attachment bolts holding the tank to the tractor frame.

    • 3

Slide the gas tank out of the tractor. Pour the remaining gas in the tank into the bucket.

    • 4

Count the number of bolts, nuts or pebbles before placing them in the gas tank. Fill the tank one-third full with water. Seal the tank shut.

    • 5

Secure the tank to the paint shaker. Set to agitate for approximately an hour.

    • 6

Drain the water and remove all of the nuts, bolts or pebbles from the tank. Place the tank back in the tractor. Attach the fuel line and fuel gauge.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the tank is rusted, replace the water with 1 gallon of white vinegar.

  • You can use ball bearings in place of nuts and bolts or pebbles.

  • Check the filler neck for baffles, this can make removing the nuts, bolts, bearings or pebbles from the tank difficult. The baffle keeps fuel from sloshing back up the filler neck. Using smaller nuts and bolts and a magnet will make removing them easier.

  • Do not use sharp objects inside the gas tank.

  • Check for leaks before refilling with gas. Use proper sealant (if necessary).
