How to Install a Boat Dock Slip

Docks that are used on a small to mid-sized lake may need to be removed at the end of each boating season, depending on the climate of the area. The dock needs to be semi-permanent, which means that it can be removed and reinstalled at the beginning or end of the season. This type of dock attaches to dock posts or supports that rest on the bottom of the lake. Installing a boat dock slip requires securing all of the pieces together. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the dock on both sides with the tape measure. Three posts are needed on each long side of the dock. One is placed on each corner and two on the edges at the center. Mark where the posts will be located with the pencil.

    • 2

Set the first post bracket on the pencil mark on the underside of the dock. Secure the post bracket to the dock with screws using the power drill. Repeat this step for the remaining post brackets.

    • 3

Place the metal dock posts in the water where the dock will be installed. Allow the dock posts to sink to the bottom. Determine the distance between the posts by using the tape measure. Align the dock posts so they are side by side.

    • 4

Lift the wooden dock with the help of a second person and carry it into the water. Position the post brackets on the sides of the dock over the dock posts. Adjust the dock posts as needed to align them properly.

    • 5

Lower the dock onto the dock posts. Tighten the bolts on the post brackets with the wrench. Secure the end of the dock to a sea wall or an anchor on shore with lag bolts. Tighten the lag bolts with the socket wrench.

Tips & Warnings

  • Lift the dock up and adjust its location, if necessary, after attaching it to the dock posts. More than two people may be necessary if the dock is too heavy.
