The Mercruiser 260 is an inboard-outboard motor boat engine that is used in variety of different boats. When running the engine, you can troubleshoot problems you may be having with the engine based on sounds you are hearing coming from the engine and information that will show up on the boat's dashboard. Troubleshooting involves a systematic approach to eliminating potential causes of the problem until a solution is reached. Before heading out for a day of boating, it is a good idea to inspect the engine for any visual signs of potential problems.

      Turn the engine compartment to on, this will remove any build up of gases or vapors from the compartment. Insert the key into the ignition and turn the key to start the engine.

      Run the engine for a couple of minutes to allow the engine to warm up. Inspect the engine temperature gauge on your boat's dashboard and confirm that the engine is operating within the recommended range. If the engine is running too hot, shut the engine off, raise the drive section of the Mercruiser and inspect the inlet where water is drawn into keep the engine cool. If this inlet is plugged, the drive section will overheat and could damage the internal propeller used to cool the engine. If the overheating continues, open the boat engine compartment and locate and replace the thermostat.

      Inspect all the electrical connections and attach a battery meter to test the boat's battery if the Mercrusier 260 will not start. Remove and replace the spark plugs using a spark plug wrench. Inspect the bottom of the spark plug and clean off any build up of carbon using a wire brush. Excessive carbon build up can prevent the spark plug from generating a sufficient enough spark to run the engine.
