Dishwasher Plumbing Installation

You'll need to install plumbing for your dishwasher to work.

In order for a dishwasher to work properly, it needs connection to electricity and plumbing. The plumbing consists of two parts: a water supply and a sewage supply to dispose of the used dishwater. When performing a dishwasher plumbing installation, you need to ensure that both of these plumbing needs are met. The water supply comes from a dual water supply valve, while the dishwasher drain hose can either be connected to a disposal or tied directly into the sink drainpipe. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the dishwasher circuit at the main circuit breaker.

    • 2

Check underneath the sink or the nearest water supply to see if it has a dual water supply valve. This is a normal water supply valve that has two outlets. It allows the dishwasher to be hooked up to the same supply as a sink. If there is not a dual water supply valve installed, install one. Turn off the water supply for your house or apartment. Unhook the sink water supply hose. Turn the supply valve counterclockwise with a wrench to loosen. Apply pipe thread compound to the supply pipe. Screw the new dual water supply valve onto the pipe and tighten with a wrench. Wrap one of the supply valve outlets with plumber's tape. Connect the supply pipe from the sink above to the outlet.

    • 3

Plan the route for the water supply hose leading from the dual outlet back to the dishwasher. This will also be the route that the drainpipe for the dishwasher follows. If needed, drill holes with a power drill and spade bit through any cabinet walls in the way. Sand down any rough edges of the holes with sandpaper or a file.

    • 4

Remove the lower front panel and bottom toe panel from the front of the dishwasher. These are usually held in place with screws on the sides. Wrap an elbow joint with plumber's tape. Insert the elbow joint into the front of the dishwasher water inlet.

    • 5

Connect one end of the water supply hose to the elbow joint. Run the hose through the cabinets to where the dual water supply valve is located. Wrap the outlet on the water supply valve with plumber's tape and connect the washer supply hose. Tighten with a wrench.

    • 6

Run the drain hose for the dishwasher to the dishwasher inlet on the drainpipe or the garbage disposal. On a new installation, you may need to knock out the dishwasher connection in the disposal or the dishwasher drainpipe. To do this, press the edge of a screwdriver against the plastic until it pops out. Discard the plastic before connecting the hose. Secure the hose with a hose clamp.

    • 7

Elevate the central part of the drain hose. It should be higher than the connection at the drainpipe or disposal to help prevent backflow. Secure the hose to the wall or cabinet with a pipe clamp.

    • 8

Restore the power to the dishwasher. Run a short load in the dishwasher. Check the washer drain hose and water supply hose as the dishwasher runs to ensure that there are no leaks. Tighten any couplings or clamps if needed.

    • 9

Replace the toe and kick panels on the dishwasher.
