How to Use Plaid Crackle Medium for Acrylic Paint

Save

Plaid FolkArt brand crackle medium is used to give painted crafts a refined and antique appearance. Crackle is primarily used on wooden projects but can be applied to other mediums as well. It can be applied to both large and small projects. Plaid crackle medium is designed for use with acrylic craft paints. These and other painting supplies are available at most craft stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Acrylic paint
  • Plaid FolkArt brand crackle medium
  • Paintbrushes
  • Paint your project piece with acrylic paints. Use a paintbrush to completely cover the piece with paint, so that you can no longer see the wood or other base medium. This is only the first of three coats that you will be applying to your project. Allow the paint to dry.

  • Add the crackle medium once the first coat of paint is dry. Use a paintbrush to apply the medium just as you would regular paint. Completely cover all of the painted regions where you want the crackle effect to be visible, making sure not to overlook any areas. Allow the crackle medium to dry.

  • Apply the final coat of acrylic paint. Use a contrasting color of paint rather than the color of the first coat. Paint over every previously painted region of the piece. Allow the paint to dry. The crackle effect will be visible once the final coat has dried. Cracks will develop throughout the top coat to reveal the paint underneath, giving the piece an aged look.
