How to Assume a Horse Stance in Karate

The horse stance, known in karate as the straddle-leg stance (kiba dachi), is the most fundamental of martial arts stances. It's a basic training stance that develops strength in the legs, hips and ankles.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Martial Arts Supplies
  • Martial Arts Uniforms
  • Martial Arts Videos
  1. Step 1

    Face forward, keeping your spine and head erect.

  2. Step 2

    Point your feet straight ahead.

  3. Step 3

    Spread your feet in a straight line about two shoulder widths apart.

  4. Step 4

    Gripping the floor with the toes, lower your hips downward by bending your knees forward of the ankles and keeping your back straight.

  5. Step 5

    Bend your elbows, keeping your arms at your sides and making your hands into upturned fists.

Tips & Warnings
  • To build strength, lower your horse stance as far as you can, then hold for 3 minutes. Relax and repeat for several sets. Eventually, you'll be able to hold for longer periods, inproving leg muscles and improving kicking techniques.
  • Practice your stance in front of a wall mirror.
  • The martial arts are physically demanding. Warm up with stretches before attempting any martial arts technique.
