Assume an Attention Stance in Karate

All martial arts have a formal stance in which you come to attention, usually when addressed by an instructor or a senior belt.

  • Martial Arts Videos

    Informal Attention Stance (Heisoku Dachi)

  1. Step 1

    Place your feet together, pointing straight ahead.

  2. Step 2

    Keep your knees slightly bent and your arms to your sides.

  3. Step 3

    Distribute your weight evenly on your legs.

  4. Step 4

    Maintain good posture. Keep your head, neck and back perfectly straight.

  5. Step 5

    Look straight ahead, but don't focus on anything in particular.

  6. Formal Attention Stance (Musubi Dachi)

  7. Step 1

    Place your heels together and point your feet out at a 45-degree angle.

  8. Step 2

    Keep your knees slightly bent and your arms to your sides.

  9. Step 3

    Distribute your weight evenly on your legs.

  10. Step 4

    Maintain good posture. Keep your head, neck and back perfectly straight.

  11. Step 5

    Look straight ahead, but don't focus on anything in particular.

Tips & Warnings
  • In karate, all formal individual and two-person exercises begin with an attention stance and a bow to show respect and humility.
