How to Assume an Hourglass Stance in Karate

The hourglass stance (sanchin dachi) is one of the first stances a beginner learns. It's a strong stance for blocking and striking.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Martial Arts Supplies
  • Martial Arts Uniforms
  • Martial Arts Videos
  1. Step 1

    Place the heel of one foot and the ball of the other foot on a horizontal line about a shoulder width apart.

  2. Step 2

    Turn the forward foot inward and point the back foot straight ahead.

  3. Step 3

    Bend your legs until your knees touch.

  4. Step 4

    Grip the floor with your toes.

  5. Step 5

    Tighten your buttocks and pull your inside thigh muscles together.

Tips & Warnings
  • While a strong stance for blocking and striking, it doesn't allow a lot of mobility.
  • The martial arts are physically demanding. Warm up with stretches before attempting any martial arts technique.
