How to Estimate Trim Work
The "trim" of a room is the pieces of wood that border a room, typically along the area where a wall meets the floor and sometimes where the same wall meets the ceiling. Adding trim work to a room can help improve its overall look. If you want to estimate how much trim work you'll need for a particular room, you can do so by finding the dimensions of the room's walls. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Use a tape measure to find the length of the first wall in the room where you will be installing trim work. Measure along the bottom portion of the wall, just above where the wall meets the floor. Find the number of inches in this length (for example, 60) and divide by 12 to find the number of feet (for example, 60 divided by 12 is 5 feet).

2
Make a mark on the wall at the portion where you want the top of your trim work to stop. Measure from this mark to the ground to find the height of your trim work, in inches. Divide by 12 to find the feet. For example, if you want your trim work to be 6 inches in height, 6 divided by 12 is 0.5 feet.

3
Measure all of the other walls in your room the same way. Add all of the length requirements you found together to get the total number of feet of trim work you will need. The height will not change from wall to wall. For example, if you have four walls in a room that will get trim and two are 6 feet and two are 5 feet, that's a total of 22 feet of trim work you will need.

4
Measure the height of your door to the room (if you're installing trim around the door). Also measure the width of the door. Find all this in feet, and add these numbers to your original total. The width of the trim in this measurement should still be the same number you decided on in Step 2 so that the trim appears uniform.

5
Measure the dimensions of your windows (the same way you measured the dimensions of the door) to find out how much trim work you will need for each window in your room (if applicable). Add these numbers to your original total for an estimate of how much trim work you will need to cover all applicable areas of your room.
