Broken, old televisions are hard rubbish.

Hard rubbish consists of items you cannot throw away with regular trash because they are too large or are made of unacceptable materials. This includes appliances, large electronics such as computers or photocopiers, car parts, mattresses and furniture. The removal of hard rubbish varies by locality, as some areas offer municipal pick-up periodically and others do not. You may be able to sell some of your hard rubbish to metal scrap collectors. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Call your local scrap metal collector to find out if they will offer you payment for your hard rubbish. Many scrap metal collection companies will include pick-up of the items. Aluminum items are especially valuable for their recyclability.

    • 2

Contact your municipal trash collection department and inquire about its policy for hard rubbish. Some areas will allow you to set the items out on the curb at certain times of the year, and the department will pick up the trash and remove it for you.

    • 3

Set the hard rubbish on the curb according to the instructions from your local trash department. If it does not offer curbside removal of the items, haul them to your local dump yourself. Call beforehand to make sure the dump accepts whatever hard rubbish you have.
