Jeeps are great all-terrain vehicles.

The procedure for installing an ARG hydro assist in a Jeep Wrangler depends on whether you have an automatic or manual transmission Jeep. The pushrod for the automatic version is installed on a different location on the firewall. When installing a hydro boost assist in a manual Jeep Wrangler, keep in mind that you can easily source the needed parts from the salvage yard to save money. Chevy and GM hydro boost parts from old 1-ton trucks, vans and diesels can be used in this procedure. You can also buy new parts online.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the Jeep in a level and well-lit area. Open the bonnet and wear safety gloves to protect your hands from brake fluid and other engine fluids.

    • 2

Use a drill to make two holes on the firewall. A GM hydro boost is held on by six studs; four are attached to the firewall. Remove the two studs from the booster mounting plate and use this as a guide to drill a couple of holes on the firewall. This will also allow you to mount the push rod eye on the brake pedal stud and align them with the new holes on the firewall.

Use a grinder or another cutting tool to sever the top-left corner of the boosting plate to clear the wiper motor bracket.

    • 3

Cut the pushrod using a grinder or electric cutting tool to fit the hydro boost in the firewall. The length of the pushrod will vary according to the make and model of your Jeep. You will either have to open the Chevy push rod considerably or use the push rod eye from the Jeep to weld the pushrod together.

    • 4

Install the booster on the firewall. It is best to have a friend support the booster on the firewall as you connect the push rod to the pedal stud. Secure the booster with high-grade 3.8-in. by 1-in. bolts. Tighten using a socket wrench.

    • 5

Connect the return lines and the hoses before testing the efficiency of the hydro boost.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to use safety equipment when handling power tools.

  • Brake and hydraulic fluid are corrosive to paint and other smooth surfaces. Protect all painted surfaces with a cotton rag.
