White sugar is used in your homemade fuse.

Making your own fuse is a very simple project. It can be a lot of fun as well as helpful when it comes to various projects where you would need a fuse line to light something. A homemade fuse should take you about five minutes to make and is as easy to use as it is to put together.

Things You'll Need

  • 20 grams potassium nitrate
  • 10 grams sugar
  • Tissue
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a small section of the tissue to use for your fuse. The section should be one inch wide and three inches long.

    • 2

Fold a small section of the tissue up lengthwise to create a lip. The section should be about a quarter inch into the tissue. Lay the tissue down and fold it up a quarter inch, making a distinct crease.

    • 3

Mix together 20 grams of potassium nitrate and 10 grams of white sugar. Make sure that they are mixed thoroughly.

    • 4

Using 1/4 of a teaspoon of the potassium nitrate and sugar mix, make an even line of the mixture on the lip of the tissue piece that you just folded up. The mix should form an even line on the inside crease of the lip.

    • 5

Roll the tissue very tightly into a pipe by folding the lip down and rolling the length of the tissue tightly into itself. Fold the ends into themselves slightly and then twist the tissue until it is a very tight and stable pipe. The final product will be about three inches long.

Lighting the fuse on fire will start it up. When doing this, make sure that the fuse is in a safe area and that you will not be holding it as it goes off. A great way to keep it standing upright is to attach a clothes peg to the bottom of the fuse as this will allow it to stand straight up.
