How to Call Out From Computers Using Broadband Access
The advent of broadband has revolutionized the telecommunications industry. This high bandwidth Internet connection allows users to transmit and receive large volumes of information at high speed. Used in conjunction with Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), users can speak to friends and family as if using a traditional landline, only for cheaper. There are a number of different ways to take advantage of VoIP technology, but no matter the method chosen, the faster the broadband speed, the better the connection will be.
Things You'll Need

1
Choose the hardware you'd like to use to make calls; this will affect your service provider options and the steps to installation and use. With broadband it's possible to use a computer directly to make calls or to use a normal touchtone phone in conjunction with a VoIP adapter to make calls indirectly through your computer. If using a computer directly to make calls, you'll need to have a model that has a microphone and speaker attached, or you'll need to buy a headset that has earphones and a microphone that plugs into the appropriate jacks on your computer.

2
Download your chosen VoIP software if you're using a computer to make calls. Skype is one of the most popular software, but there are a number of options that exist. Once you've downloaded and installed the VoIP software on your computer, it may be necessary to create an account. Some software only allows you to make calls for free to other users that also have an account with the same program so choose the software you'd like to use carefully. Some software requires you to put credit into the account with a credit card. Once you've created the account, you can search for contacts and add them to your contact list. Each software provider has a different method of operation so read the instructions for usage. Plug your headset connections into the appropriate jacks if necessary and make calls as directed.

Order hardware (VoIP adapter) and a service plan from a VoIP service provider if you would prefer to speak from a touchtone phone. This allows you to use broadband to make phone calls without having to turn your computer on or sit down at your computer. Vonage is a popular service provider, but there are plenty of other options available. Some service providers offer flat rates, and some charge per minute. Compare the different packages available and choose a plan that suits your needs and budget.

4
Connect the VoIP adapter to the broadband router or modem in your home if you want to make calls from your touchtone phone. Then connect the phone to the VoIP adapter. If you have a touchtone phone with multiple handsets, plug the base handset into the VoIP adapter. You can begin making calls once the adapter is connected to your Internet connection and your touchtone phone.

Tips & Warnings
Order and install as fast a broadband connection as possible.
Avoid peak times if call quality is important. If there's an echo on the line, hang up and try the call again. Broadband connections can sound the same as traditional landlines, but they can also be imperfect during periods of high call volume.
