How to Cool an Above Ground Swimming Pool?

The heating and cooling systems for swimming pools are designed to keep the water at a cool temperature during those hot summer months. Typically one device, called a heat pump, accomplishes both the heating and cooling parts of the process. The whole purpose of a pool is to cool off, and you can't do that if the water is as hot as the air outside. You can cool an above-ground swimming pool by purchasing a cooling system that fits your particular pool. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure from one side of your pool's circular or oval-shaped outer shell to the other. Make sure that your tape measure crosses the exact center of the pool. This number, measured in feet, is the diameter of your pool.

    • 2

Measure from the top of the water line in your pool to the bottom of your pool. This number, measured in feet, is the depth of your pool.

    • 3

Multiply your above-ground swimming pool's diameter by itself. If your diameter was 10 feet, multiplying that number by itself would yield 100 feet.

    • 4

Multiply the number you just found by the number you measured for your pool's depth. If your diameter multiplied by your diameter was 100 feet and your depth was 8 feet, multiplying those two numbers would yield 800 cubic feet. This is the volume, in cubic feet, of your above-ground swimming pool.

    • 5

Multiply the volume of your swimming pool by 5.9. There are 5.9 gallons of water in every 1 cubic foot of volume. For example, 800 cubic feet multiplied by 5.9 is 4,720 gallons. The number you get is the size of your pool in gallons. Purchase a pool heat pump that is designed for the pool of your size. If you desire, you can also get a separate cooling unit. This unit will also have to be compatible with a pool of your size.
