Do it Yourself Deck Cleaning
Decks are a common outdoor fixture in most homes, and while these areas provide endless hours of entertainment and relaxation they must be cleaned on a regular basis. Because decks are exposed to all the elements, the wood within this structure should stay clean to prevent premature decay as well as maintaining its attractive finish. Things You'll Need
- Oxygen bleach cleaning product
- Bucket
- Protective face mask
- Protective eyewear
- Latex gloves
- Large sponge

Remove any items from the deck before cleaning. This includes furniture, plants and other decorative items that you do not wish to clean.

Purchase an oxygen bleach cleaning product that features a sodium percarbonate concentration of 25 percent or less. Make sure the cleaning product is designed to clean a deck. These products are available at most home improvement retail stores.

Pour the cleaning solution into a bucket and follow the product instructions regarding diluting with water. Make sure you wear a protective face mask as well as protective eyewear when handling the cleaner.

Wear protective latex gloves on your hands and dip a large sponge into the cleaning solution. Begin cleaning the deck in one corner and work your way out. Make sure you continually re-dip the sponge to ensure ample cleaning solution is applied. Repeat until the entire deck is cleaned.

Allow the deck to dry for 24-hours before replacing furniture and other deck items.

Tips & Warnings
While pressure washers are traditionally used to clean decks, the high pressure water may actually erode the wood and cause it to become weak.
Do not buy a oxygen bleach cleaner with a higher concentration of 25 percent as you may accidentally bleach the deck.
