How to Recover a Combination to a Padlock

How to Recover a Combination to a Padlock thumbnail
Lock manufacturers can supply lost combinations for padlocks.

Combination locks are most commonly used in schools and businesses that need to provide secure storage to students or employees. Although it is possible for consumers to buy combination locks individually, the majority are used in educational or other public facilities and private companies. If you've lost the combination for your padlock, the best way to get it open again is to contact the manufacturer.

Instructions

    • 1

Note down all distinguishing features of your combination lock, including any model information or serial numbers printed or engraved on it.

    • 2

Take this information to the individual who manages security in your organization or school. If you're unsure who this is, ask human resources or an administrator. If you bought your lock from a retailer, skip this step.

    • 3

Contact the manufacturer of the lock if you are responsible for lock combinations at a school or business or if you bought your lock directly from a retailer. Different manufacturers have different processes for retrieving combinations, but most will require you to submit your request in writing. You will be required to supply as much information about the lock as possible and, in some cases, may have to supply a photocopy of the lock showing that it isn't attached to anything. Some manufacturers may charge a fee.

    • 4

Submit a request for your replacement combination. Most manufacturers will send it by post and may take up to six weeks to do so.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some companies, like Master Lock, offer an online resource to store your combination.
