How to Remove An Airstream's Refrigerator

Recognized by their shiny aluminum exterior and distinctive dome-shaped roofs, Airstream trailers provide many comforts of home -- including refrigerators -- that operate on alternating-current (AC) electricity, as well as battery power and propane gas. The refrigerators mount to a metal frame inserted into a wooden cabinet in the trailer. If the refrigerator requires removal for repair or replacement, you must disconnect the gas supply and the electrical connection and then remove the screws from the mounting flange.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the main gas supply to the trailer. Open the refrigerator access hatch behind the refrigerator on the outside of the trailer. Unplug the AC and DC power supply cords.

    • 2

Place a wrench on the flat area of the gas line supply connector. Place another wrench on the gas fitting on the refrigerator's side of the gas line. Disconnect the refrigerator's gas supply line by twisting the second wrench while holding first wrench stationary.

    • 3

Screw the gas line cap onto the end of the refrigerator gas supply line (the end that comes from the trailer). Secure the gas line cap in place using the wrenches.

    • 4

Remove the mounting screws from the mounting flange around the face of the refrigerator using a screwdriver. Hold the refrigerator at the front edges of the door frame, and wiggle the refrigerator side to side while pulling toward you. When the refrigerator starts to lean forward out of its cabinet, grasp it by the bottom of its frame and lift it out of the cabinet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep in mind that brass gas line fittings turn in the opposite direction of standard fittings.

  • RV refrigerators can weigh more than 100 lbs.; do not try to remove your refrigerator without help.
