How to Install Roof Rails on a 1967 Mustang

A roof rail rack mounted on top of your 1967 Mustang helps provide more surface area for carrying items that do not easily fit inside the vehicle, such as skis and bicycles. You can buy a roof rail kit designed to fit your Mustang from your local auto parts store. Installing the roof rack is a relatively simple task that can be accomplished in less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the roof rack kit and inventory the components. The kit should contain two mounting side brackets, and central rack bars which connect to the bracket joints. Some kits contain additional specialized pieces such as clamps for skis and rails for bicycles. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to assemble the rack. This is usually done with a Phillips-head screwdriver or nut driver.

    • 2

Position the rack system on the roof, and use a measuring tap to make sure the unit is centered on the surface.

    • 3

Mark the hole locations on the roof for the bolt mounting holes. Put on protective gloves and safety glasses, and use a drill to make the holes in the roof.

    • 4

Place the roof rack back on top of the vehicle and line up the holes in the roof with those on the bracket mounting plates. Insert the mounting bolts and secure them with the appropriate wrench, screwdriver or nut driver. If provided with the kit, install the additional pieces, such as ski clamps or bicycle rails.
