How to Test ESL Students in Maryland

How to Test ESL Students in Maryland thumbnail
Inernational students take ESL placement test to determine their readiness for English and other classes in Maryland colleges.

English as a Second Language (ESL) students in Maryland need ESL testing before entering college if English is not their first language. Students who have been in ESL programs throughout their K-12 education can connect to the appropriate ESL testing through the ESL department in their district or through their ESL coordinator at their school. ESL students who have tested out of ESL programs in middle and high school may still need ESL testing before entering college.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the academic support center at the community college, college or university of your choice in Maryland. The academic support center or academics office will provide students who are non-native speakers of English with placement testing information.

    • 2

Discuss with your academic adviser which ESL placement test is appropriate for you. This will depend on whether or not you are seeking a degree in English or if you are simply taking courses that require placement testing.

    • 3

Pick up sample tests and review materials for the ESL placement test you are taking. If you need extra help preparing for the test, let you academic adviser know. There are usually student tutors available to assist you.

    • 4

Schedule an online placement test with your academic adviser and report to the testing site at the appropriate time.

    • 5

Take the test. There is typically no time limit for placement testing, but most ESL placement tests take approximately two hours to complete.

    • 6

Receive your test results in just a few minutes after testing. This will give you the information you need to complete your registration for classes.
