How to Identify a Reliance Motor ID#

A manufacturer of electric motors for over 100 years, Reliance offers a full line of alternating (AC) and direct-current (DC) motors. Purchased by the Baldor Corporation in 2007, the Reliance division continues to manufacture industrial, automotive and other electric motors in a wide array of specifications. Identification of Reliance electric motors requires locating and referencing numbers from the ID plate. The primary numbers are the model, catalog and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, or NEMA, frame number -- a universal code used by all electric motor manufacturers. Electrical specifications are important, as motors with the same model number may have different electrical specifications.

Instructions

    • 1

Look on the Reliance motor housing to find the ID plate. The ID plate is normally prominent on the motor housing. It is quickly identifiable by the Reliance/Baldor name featured on the top of the tag.

    • 2

Locate the various codes and electrical ratings on the ID tag. The model and NEMA frame number are usually on the top line, underneath the corporate logo. All codes found on Reliance ID tags have headings identifying what they represent. Due to the amount of different reliance models manufactured throughout the years, they have a variety of different model and frame number formats.

    • 3

Write down the model and frame number, as well as any electrical information. The electrical information on the ID tag, such as volts and amperage, will help further identify the Reliance motor once the general model is determined.

    • 4

Find the frame and model numbers in the Reliance/Baldor catalog. Reliance has an extensive catalog which identifies the various models currently manufactured. Look up the model using the model number, sometimes referred to as the catalog number, or NEMA frame number. Use the electric information to further identify the Reliance electric motor. For example, NEMA frame number "143T" and catalog (model) number "CP3580T," identifies a three-phase, totally enclosed, foot-mounted severe duty motor, manufactured in three different volt models and available from one to 400 hp when referenced to the Reliance catalog .

Tips & Warnings

  • Reliance will aid in the identification of any electric motor manufactured by them, including older models which are no longer produced. They provide an identification section where you can enter various ID tag numbers for a model search.
