1
Unroll and untangle the lights before attempting to hang them up. Separate strands of lights and plug the lights into an outlet to make sure that they work. Stretch the icicle light strands out and lay them down flat on the ground before attempting to bring them up to the side of the house.

2
Secure the ladder against the side of the house near the area that you are going to hang the lights. Gather up the nails and the hammer and bring them up the ladder when you climb it. Place a nail where you want the icicle lights to start and pound it into the side of the house just below your gutter. Continue doing this every 15 inches or so across the side of the house. Move the ladder every time you need to reach farther than is safe from the ladder.

Pick up the end of the string of lights and bring it up the ladder. Arrange the lights so that they drape over the nails. Twist the cord of lights once around the nails to help hold them in place. Check the lights to make sure the icicles are hanging down. Leave enough room at the end of the strand of lights to plug the lights into the extension cord. The length of icicle lights you will need will vary depending on the size of your house.
